Evening at the Camden's finds Simon and his friend, Nigel, playing with cars in Simon's room. Simon asks Nigel what he should get Deena for their three-month anniversary, and Nigel's idea of a toy car doesn't seem to go over too well. Nigel says he doesn't want to spend his weekend looking for the perfect present. Meanwhile in the girls' bedroom, Lucy tells Mary that when she was going out with Wilson, guys were always calling. But now, nobody is. Matt walks in and Lucy says they saw Heather at the mall. Matt can't believe they didn't tell him sooner, grabs the bag of Fritos, and takes off.

Eric and Annie arrive at the hospital to pre-register, and Annie is mortified when they see a certain doctor working there. Back at the house, Lucy hears the doorbell and finds Rod standing there who tells her his mother just died. Lucy and Mary plan to let Rod stay in the closet since he doesn't want to go home and face his father. Matt calls Heather's house and asks her mom if Heather is O.K. Heather's mom says she's fine and home for the weekend but is out with her friends right now. Heather's mom tells her that sooner or later she'll have to tell him she's engaged. Eric and Annie get home and Eric tells his son they saw the doctor who delivered Matt, Dr. Hastings, at the hospital. Turns out the doctor almost killed Matt in delivery. They assumed he had lost his license or stopped practicing. Annie calls the hospital and asks if something happened to her, if she would have the chance of getting Dr. Hastings - the hospital says it is possible.

The next day, Matt volunteers to take Simon and Nigel to mall to look for a gift for Deena. Matt stops at Heather's house and they sit outside for several minutes. Annie and Eric go to the hospital and they both express their disapproval of Dr. Hastings working at the hospital. Annie's stress has elevated her blood pressure and the doctor in charge tells her she has to let it go and just calm down. Eric says maybe they should talk to Dr. Hastings, but Annie wants nothing to do with him. Matt, Nigel and Simon get home and Matt tries on a new pair of pants while Simon brags about finding the perfect gift - butterfly hair clips.

Mary gets a phone call from Michael Towner, the guy who hit her with a car. He says he wants to see her and she agrees to meet him. A few hours later, Simon can't find the butterfly clips and is going crazy looking on every shelf. Eric and Annie go up to the girls' bedroom and finds Ruthie and Rod playing Go-Fish in the closet. Matt takes off to Heather'' house where she gets in his car and he sees her engagement ring. Matt asks how she could do that to him. She says she wants Eric to marry her and her fiancee. He tells her if she doesn't want him, she doesn't get his dad. He tells her to just forget him.

At the pool hall, Mary and Michael are talking about how much Michael has changed since the accident. He tells her she hasn't changed at all. Michael says he would like to be a good friend. He asks if things don't work out with her and Wilson, if she would consider going out with him. Back at the house, Rod and Eric are talking and Rod tells him how his father hasn't mourned over his mom's illness or her death. Upstairs, Ruthie walks past Simon and he sees the butterfly clips in her hair and she takes off running.

Annie walks in the kitchen and finds Eric looking for something to eat. He tells her that he called Dr. Hastings and left a message to talk to him. Eric tells her that if they went in and yelled at him they would both feel better. Annie storms off and can't believe he would do that. Michael walks Mary up to the door of the house He gives her a kiss just as Matt walks in. Mary pushes him to the ground and Matt just walks by. He goes in the house and tells his parents Heather is engaged. Simon runs in chasing Ruthie and Annie gives him back the butterflies. Nigel comes down and wants to go home since Simon is just talking about Deena.

Eric and Annie go to meet with Dr. Hastings at the hospital. There, Dr. Hastings admits that Annie was exhibiting all the signs of Eclampsia. He says he was nervous and scared and too inexperienced. He said his ego was more developed than his medical training. He says he screwed up. Annie asks why he didn't apologize. He says he didn't have the guts to face them, so he ran away. Eric says they are talking to the medical board Monday morning. Dr. Hastings said he didn't believe in God before that night, but he knew somebody saved Matt. He said he went back to school and dedicated his life to working with high-risk babies. Annie and Eric say they won't talk to the director - knowing that God works in mysterious ways.

Nigel comes back and Simon says he's glad he didn't leave and apologizes for being a jerk. The next morning, Heather arrives at the house and goes up to see Matt. She tells him she's sorry and she didn't want to hurt him. He says he wants another chance. He doesn't understand why he can't get what he wants for once. She says she loves her fiancee, and he doesn't get to decide whom she does or doesn't marry. At church on Sunday, Eric preaches about forgiveness and encourages the congregation to make it a week of reconciliation. At his mom's funeral, Rod's dad and Rod finally get a chance to talk things over.
