It's night in Glen Oak and the Camden household is buzzing as usual. Annie lets each of the kids have a spoon that was dipped in the batter of a cake she is making. Mary and Eric come in and announce to everybody that she just passed her test and has received her learner's permit. All of the kids start to plan how to stay away from Mary's driving. The next day, Simon and Lucy take the bus to their respective schools. Ruthie dons a football helmet in the car while Mary drives.

Simon gets on his bus only to find there is no place for him to sit - and the bus can't move without everybody sitting down. He gets grief from the "cool kids" in the back of the bus and ends up sitting towards the front. Lucy has her own problems on the bus, where she is the upperclassman. Stevie tries to sit next to her and tries to convince her to go out with him, which annoys Stevie's girlfriend who is sitting only a few seats ahead of them. She gives Lucy a dirty look as Stevie continues sitting next to her.

Eric goes to counsel a woman who is still feeling bad about her son, Alan, who died over 3 years ago. He tells her to cry for 15 minutes as hard as she can, but after the 15 minutes she must stop and get on with the day. He suggests that she go do something for herself like go to a salon, which she eventually does.

Matt drives to school in his new car and sees a pregnant woman on the side of road with a broken down car. Matt says he doesn't know much about cars but he will try and help - only she takes off in HIS car, leaving him stranded. Eventually, a police car comes over but they don't believe his story - they think he stole the car the "girl" was driving. They take him to the police station.

Simon finally gets to school and a bully, Nick, picks on Marvin who apparently didn't do Nick's essay. Marvin explains to Simon and Nick that it has to be in your own handwriting. Simon offers a compromise, saying that Marvin can help Nick with his essay instead of doing it for him. Everybody agrees and Simon is the hero of the school.

At the salon, Elizabeth is getting her hair done like Eric suggested when she overhears another woman, Caroline, talking about her heart transplant she received several years ago. Elizabeth thinks that maybe Alan's heart went to this woman, so she goes to Eric who says he will try and get in touch with Caroline to see if her suspicions are correct.

Later that night, Sergeant Michaels brings Matt home and explains that Matt was arrested for grand theft auto.

Eric meets with Caroline who says that she isn't Elizabeth's recipient, that her transplant came from another state. Eric is disappointed and is dreading telling Elizabeth the news. He asks if maybe she would be willing to talk to her anyway. She agrees.

The next day, Lucy is approached by Stevie's girlfriend and two other girls who tell her to stay away from Stevie. Lucy tells them that Mary is her big sister and can take all three of them so don't mess with her. After school, the three girls find Lucy who runs to the car and gets in with Mary - suddenly forgetting her fear of Mary's driving.

Eric and Sergeant Michaels manage to track down the pregnant girl and Matt's car and bring her back to the Camden house. Eric introduces her as Theresa to Annie, where Annie notices they have something in common. Theresa apologizes to Matt who says it's OK and that he forgives her. Theresa tells him that she wants to keep the baby, but is dreading seeing her parents because they said they would disown her if this ever happened. Matt writes it off and tells her that parents say a lot of things they don't mean or carry through on.

Simon's popularity turns the other way when all of the kids that Marvin helped got D's or F's. They all gang up on Simon after school and force him to walk home instead of taking the bus.

Theresa's parents arrive and when they see her they tell her she is on her own. When they leave, they make a comment about how many kids the Camden's have and Mary informs them she is having twins… that's two more, not one.

That night, Eric meets with Elizabeth and breaks the bad news to her. However, he introduces not one, not two, but three people who have received transplants from Alan.
