Eric is spending his time at a job fair downtown, interviewing candidates for positions at the church when a former inmate, Ron, sits down to talk to him. He tells Eric he can play the organ and is generously thankful when Eric gives him a chance to show what he can do. The church board of directors meanwhile are meeting with Annie at the house and elect her as a temporary treasurer and ask her to write up the annual report. She knows it will be tough but is excited to be helping.
The next morning, Annie tells Simon he has to go get a tetanus shot if he wants to play baseball this summer. Simon pleads for Matt to take him instead of his dad, and while Matt is a little uneasy, he gives in. Simon later tries to convince Matt to just sign the piece of paper himself and not go through the agony of the doctor.
Mary agrees to tutor Jimmy Moon for Lucy, who tells Mary how to make sure Jimmy is paying attention. She tells her to look deep in his eyes to make absolutely sure he understands - but not to be obvious about it because once he knows they have that power he'll move on to something else and it will take her months to figure him out.
At the church, Ron Kramer is playing the organ in front of the church board and at the conclusion of the piece, almost everyone give him their applause. Lou, one of the main directors, is concerned about Lou's criminal record - which Eric contends shows Ron is honest since he told them outright about his past. Annie expresses her own concerns about Ron.
Matt takes Simon to the clinic to get his shot and the two sit in the waiting room. Matt seems more nervous than Simon is and Simon tries to unnerve Matt into leaving. Complaining how the place smells, how hot it is in there, the state of the other people in the waiting room, etc. convince Matt to reschedule the appointment and leave.
Lucy catches Ruthie dialing phone numbers from her list - including the fire department and scolds her, telling her not to use the phone ever again.
Eric catches Lou outside the church going over some specs for a security system and argues that the church is supposed to be open for its members. He says the money for a security system can be used to hire Ron and a better use for it no less. Lou tells him that if Eric keeps trying to get Ron a job at the church, he will petition for Eric's removal as minister.
Simon, sensing defeat, locks himself in his room. Matt tries to talk Simon out while Mary goes to look for a screwdriver to take the door off the hinges. Ruthie decides this is the perfect time to try another number in her phone list - that of the police. When Simon hears the police knocking on the door, he opens flings it open and says he's ready for his shot. Sgt. Michaels gives Ruthie a lecture about calling the police for non-emergencies. Matt and Simon end up both getting shots at the clinic - both finding out they were worried about nothing.
The next Sunday, Annie gives the annual report of the church's budget and recommends, in her own way, to invest in the community of the church and not in the business of the church. She recommends they hire Ron instead of the security system. As the congregation begins to walk in, Eric finds Ron and tells him he's "on." Lou concedes defeat and the music starts and we fade out.
