On their way home that night, the family car has an electrical problem which causes Matt and Annie to pull over to the side of the road. While Annie fiddles with some wires, a man with a gun comes to the car and demands all of their money and jewelry. Matt freezes in his seat while Annie proceeds to give the man everything they have - including her wedding ring. After the man leaves, Matt is still frozen and Annie comforts her scared son.
Back at the house, Annie and Matt try to tell the police about what the robber looked like but don't do a very good job at it. Eric asks Annie and Matt how they are doing and Annie is strangely taking it all in stride while Matt is still pretty shook up.
Lucy is upstairs trying on a bunch of different dresses, trying to find the right one to wear when she announces her candidacy for class president tomorrow. When Eric disapproves of her attire, she tells him that Mary is planning to get a tattoo which causes Mary to get a little upset. Eric tells Mary that the house is a tattoo free zone. When the two girls get ready for bed, Lucy gets up and locks the bedroom door since a stranger now has the keys to their house.
The next day, Simon comes downstairs to show his mom that he now has the chicken pox. Finding out that he is the last one of the family to come down with it, Simon is heartbroken that he is powerless. He drudges upstairs while Annie makes him some breakfast.
Lucy arrives at school all excited about her candidacy when she sees her boyfriend, Jimmy Moon, passing out fliers to elect HIM as school president. Even more angry when she finds out he is using the same issues as each other, the two storm off.
Upstairs in their room, Ruthie starts movie all of her things, including her Hello Kitty pillow to Simon's top bunk. Using simple logic, Ruthie says that if she sleeps on the bottom bunk, the robber would get to her first, whereas if she is on the top bunk beside Simon, then Simon would be the first victim. Simon concedes defeat and continues playing his video game.
Eric is called to church for an unknown reason where the choir master then tells Eric that the organ player, Mrs. Hinkle, is getting a bit eccentric. Later when Eric says they have to let her go, Mrs. Hinkle is overjoyed instead of disappointed and skips out the door, eagerly waiting for her last performance this Sunday.
Matt tells Annie he called victim support and is going over to a group meeting after school. He asks Annie if she wants to go but she declines. That night, Annie goes downstairs for a snack, taking Happy with her, and checks the locks on the doors. She collapses by the front door crying and holding Happy. The next day when Annie attacks a man at the grocery store for returning her sunglasses, she finally breaks down and Mary must comfort her mother who is finally letting her fears show. The police later call and say they have a line-up of suspects but Annie doesn't tell anybody. When Matt gets a call from the police asking why they didn't show up, Eric takes them both down to the station where they fail to point out the man who robbed them.
Earlier, Jimmy Moon asked Eric to end his relationship with Lucy for him, and Eric reluctantly agreed. However, Jimmy comes over to the Camden house later and the two talk about what is going on and how they want to continue being boyfriend and girlfriend. They both agree to drop out of the election.
Matt comes back from the police lineup and finds Mary in the back yard shooting baskets. He immediately notices the tattoo on her ankle of a Wildcat, the school mascot. Annie and Eric come around the corner and start chewing Mary out when Annie suddenly remembers the robber had a tattoo on his arm. They go back to the police station where they successfully identify the robber - putting everyone's mind once again at ease.
