It's a full moon out, and the Camden children are huddled together in the dark bedroom upstairs, illuminated by a single flashlight branded by the eldest son, Matt. Matt tells a scary tale of a mutant named Mike who is known to roam the streets of this very city at night, especially on Halloween. As he tells his story of creaking stairs, Eric barges in and scares the kids to death. Hearing the screaming, Annie rushes in and then complains about not being invited and joins in the fun. Eric declines, and Simon acknowledges that Eric hates Halloween.

The next morning, Mary is in the shower when young Ruthie sneaks in and flushes the toilet, causing Mary to scream and look for the culprit. A few seconds later, Simon barges in to brush his teeth. Then a few more seconds later, Matt joins the party and uses Mary's deodorant. When she complains about him putting it in his disgusting hairy armpits, Matt tells her he has been doing it for months and she storms out of the bathroom.

After dressing, Simon goes downstairs to the kitchen and finds Ruthie designing pumpkins on colored paper for her pumpkin carving contest design that is going to be held at the carnival. Simon pleads his Annie not to let Ruthie enter because not only is she too young, but because she doesn't have a chance - Simon has won the contest the last two years in a row and is confident on his third victory. When Simon asks Ruthie what her costume is going to be, she defers to Annie who says Ruthie can go as whatever she wants to. Eric enters the kitchen and Annie tells him that she ran into someone from Eric's hometown of Binghamton. At the mention of the woman's husband, Henry Bernard, Eric coffee cup smashes as it hits the floor.

At school, Lucy and her boyfriend, Jimmy Moon meet up with a couple friends who then plan to go to Mutant Mike's house after school.

Back at the house, Annie is busy making Ruthie's dinosaur costume. A little disappointed in the home made costume, Ruthie pleads with her mom to go buy one from the store.

Mary tells Matt that a girl he has been wanting to ask out, Roxanne, just broke up with her boyfriend. When she comes over to talk to Matt, Matt asks her to the Halloween costume party and she accepts - on the condition that they go as a couple - Cyrano and Roxanne. Not knowing what this would entail, Matt accepts.

When Lucy and her friends arrive t Mutant Mike's house, the gang sneaks into the garden behind the stange man's trailer. Upon examination of the garden, Lucy spies a perfectly formed pumpkin just lying there. As Lucy picks the pumpkin up, Mutant Mike appears from nowhere and she runs off with her stolen possession.

Hearing Ruthie's complaints, Annie takes her to a store to pick out a costume. When they can't find one that Ruthie will wear, Ruthie consents to wear the dinosaur costume that Annie was making. Arriving back home after stopping off at the market, Simon is disappointed in the pumpkins Annie has brought home. When Lucy comes through the back gate with the perfect pumpkin, Simon is overjoyed and demands to know where he can find a pumpkin like hers. Annie catches on to Lucy and tells her to return the pumpkin, and Lucy knows it is the right thing to do. Placing the pumpkin by Mike's door, Lucy is once again scared as Mike opens the door. To her surprise, Mike is just as scared to see her. After a couple minutes, Lucy finds out that Mike is mentally challenged but a very nice man .

Mary goes through a box of old Halloween stuff looking for a cape for Simon when she finds an old Davy Crockett hat of Eric's in the bottom of the box. Eric takes the cap to his room and that night has a dream where he remembers the history of the cap - and how it cost him the friendship of Henry Bernard.

After seeing the costume that Roxanne wants him to wear - complete with big nose and goofy hat, Matt decides not to wear the costume and instead goes to Roxanne's as a hobo. When she disapproves of his attire, Matt realizes that Roxanne is too caught up in herself to truly love anybody else.

After Ruthie refuses to wear the dinosaur costume, Annie asks Mary if she knows anyone who could babysit Ruthie tonight while everybody else is gone. But Mary hasn't been completely honest with her parents - she isn't going anywhere, she wants the house to herself. So Mary takes Ruthie into the bathroom and a couple minutes later Ruthie comes out with a mop on her head and a painted face - Ruthie is going as Happy!

Taking his coon skin hat with him, Eric arrives at the house of Henry Bernard and rings the bell. At first, Henry doesn't recognize Eric but then remembers the story of the cap. Henry tells Eric he got the hat for him, and the two share a few minutes of memories in Henry's house.

The pumpkin carving contest at the carnival has begun, and Simon is pretty nervous. Lucy arrives with Mike and everyone is taken back by the tall man in the strange costume. When Eric announces the winner of the pumpkin carving contest is Lucy, Lucy tells everyone that Mike actually carved the pumpkin and tells Mike to take off his mask. A little nervous being around people, Mike says thank-you, and Simon shakes his hand as a true master of pumpkin carving.
